課程概述

This course explores how we may create profound links with oddities and monstrosities found in nature and culture. In light of current neuroimaging findings, we aim to bridge gaps presumed to exist between several aesthetic notions such as the ugly, the grotesque, the ridiculous, the sublime and the beautiful. By way of illustrating examples found in the arts and popular culture, this course invites our experiments with the insertion of oddities or monstrosities into seemingly normal and agreeable contexts. We also aim to sort out a blending of semiotic and phenomenological ways of thinking so as to gain a better chance of devising strategies for our engagement with texts and phenomena of all kinds. All in all, our success of dealing with oddities and monstrosities is governed by the chance of gaining pleasure, delight and understanding that we are able to intuit and to entertain.

課程目標
This course aims to shed light on certain aspects of art: (1) how we can make good use of the changing, non-adaptive and non-exclusive features of syntagmatic combinations so as to lead a creative life; (2) how these features serve in giving rise to certain illusion from which we would gain pride and joy; (3) how we can conceive our emotions as a wide range of varieties that we seek to justify and integrate while working out various sorts of play scenarios.
課程要求
Students are required to (1) preview contents for each week; (2) participate rigorously in discussions; (3) keep reading journals regularly; (4) present midterm and final briefings; (5) submit final papers.
